Albinoni | Giazotto - Adagio in G minor (for String Quartet) by Filipe Mendel

A carefully crafted arrangement of the celebrated Adagio in G minor, composed by Remo Giazotto and traditionally associated with Tomaso Albinoni, adapted for string quartet.

Known for its deeply expressive melody, solemn atmosphere, and rich harmonic progression, the Adagio in G minor has become one of the most recognizable works associated with the Baroque tradition. Although often referred to as “Albinoni’s Adagio,” the complete composition was created and published by Giazotto in the twentieth century, inspired by musical material he associated with Albinoni.

This arrangement translates the work’s lyrical intensity into an intimate chamber setting for two violins, viola, and cello. The original melodic line is carefully distributed throughout the ensemble, while the inner voices and cello provide harmonic depth, continuity, and expressive support.

Particular attention has been given to voicing, phrasing, articulation, dynamics, and instrumental balance, allowing the quartet to preserve the contemplative character of the original while exploring the warmth, resonance, and expressive flexibility of string instruments.

The result is a refined and emotionally powerful chamber arrangement that highlights the beauty of the melody, the richness of the harmony, and the intimate dialogue between the four instruments.
